When it comes to interior design for holiday lets, one of the most important things is finding that sweet spot between practicality and personality. You want a space that looks beautiful in photos, but feels even better when guests walk through the door. That was exactly the brief for this recent project - a modern cottage tucked away in the picturesque village of West Meon, right in the heart of the South Downs National Park.
For this holiday let, so I had the joy of starting with a blank canvas. The interiors needed to feel clean and modern, but still warm, welcoming and just a little bit luxurious. It also needed to be easy to maintain - something that both the owners and the cleaning team would thank me for later!
The design
For this holiday cottage design, I focused on soft, natural tones paired with warm woods and tactile fabrics. The idea was to create a space that felt stylish and put together, but never precious or fussy. We used a mix of relaxed linens, natural jute rugs, and carefully chosen statement pieces to give the cottage a distinct character - without overwhelming the space.
A holiday let should always feel like a home from home, so I kept the layout intuitive and unfussy. Comfortable seating, layered lighting, and just the right number of thoughtful touches (from books to throws to local artwork) meant that guests could settle in straight away.
Designed for Guests — and for practicality
One of the challenges in designing holiday lets is making sure they’re both guest-friendly and practical. Everything in this West Meon cottage was chosen with both in mind. Hardwearing finishes, wipeable surfaces, and smart storage solutions were all part of the plan. Even the colour palette was curated to stay looking fresh between changeovers - warm neutrals that hide the odd fingerprint and still feel airy and bright.
It’s that mix of easy to keep clean and easy to fall in love with that really matters when styling a holiday let.
